작가노트

나에게는 반려견이 있고 반려견과 산책을 하는 것이 나의 중요한 일상 중 하나이다. 시각에 의존하기보다 후각에 따라 움직이는 그의 시선을 따라가다 보니 구석진 곳에 피어 있는 들꽃들의 존재를 알게 되었다. 시선이 낮은 곳으로 향하니 덤불 사이에서 노는 작은 새들, 곤충들 그리고 또 다른 존재들의 흔적을 찾게 되는 습관이 생겼다. 눈에 띄지 않아 존재감을 느낄 수 없지만, 우리 주변에는 늘 작은 존재들의 소우주가 있다. 그 소우주를 알게 된 후, 항상 그곳에 있었던 작은 덤불, 잡초가 우거진 풀밭, 들꽃이 모여 있는 공간들이 전과 다르게 생명이 가득한 생태로 느껴졌다.

나는 내 눈에 익숙한 자연의 모습을 상상하며 손이 가는 대로 무의식적으로 공간을 만든다. 다양한 기법, 굵기가 다른 붓 터치와 오일 파스텔, 여러 재료가 어우러지며 상상하던 공간이 시각적으로 나타나며 이질적으로 느껴지던 색과 선들도 자연스럽게 그림 속에 녹아 든다. 캔버스를 채우는 각기 다른 요소처럼, 우리가 사는 생태도 다양한 성격과 특징을 가진 생명이 상호 작용하며 조화롭게 어울린다. 같이 어울리고 하나가 되고자 하는 마음은 인간과 타 개체를 구분하는 이분법 사고에서 벗어나 나와 이질적인 존재도 아우를 수 있는 더 큰 마음으로 나타나게 된다.

나의 ‘큰 마음’이 표현되는 주된 공간은 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 산책로 주변, 등산로 주변 풀 더미와 숲이다. 이는 가까이에도 작은 생명들의 소우주가 있음을 얘기하고자 함이며, 그와 동시에 다른 존재를 인식하는 것을 방해하는 건 그 존재와 나의 물리적 거리가 아니라 다른 생명을 알고자 하는 노력에서 나온다는 것을 나타내고자 하는 것이다.

우리 주변에는 우리와 같은 인간 뿐 아니라 인간 외의 크고 작은 존재들이 관계를 이루고, 자신에게 주어진 자리를 지키며 애쓰며 살아가고 있다. 그들의 애씀과 소중함은 우리가 시간을 들여 그들의 생명을 인지하는 것에서부터 시작한다고 생각한다.

I have a dog and taking a walk with him is one of my important daily lives. As I follow his gaze, which moves according to his sense of smell rather than relying on his sight, I found out the existence of wildflowers blooming in the corner. With low gaze, I developed a habit of finding traces of small birds, insects, and other beings playing among the bushes. Although we cannot feel the presence because we are not noticeable, there is always a microcosm of small beings around us. After learning of the microcosm, small bushes, weeds-grown grasslands, and wildflowers that were always there felt like a life-filled ecology unlike before.

I imagine nature familiar to my eyes and unconsciously create space as my hands go. Various techniques, brush touches of different thicknesses, oil pastels, and various materials are combined visually, and colors and lines that were felt differently naturally melt in painting. Like the different elements that fill the canvas, the ecology in which we live interacts and harmonizes with life with various characteristics. The desire to hang out and become one emerges as a larger mind that can encompass heterogeneous beings by breaking away from the dichotomous thinking that distinguishes humans from other objects.

The main space where my "big heart" is expressed is the grass piles and forests around trail, which are common around us. This is to say that there is a microcosm of small lives nearby, and at the same time, I want to show that what hinders me from recognizing another being comes not from the physical distance between that being and me, but from the effort to know another life.

Around us, not only humans like us, but also large and small beings form relationships. I think their preciousness begins with our time to try to recognize their lives.
